The rear garden frames the Nandaimon of Tōdai-ji and Mount Wakakusa as its backdrop.

The garden is really two: the front one, from the 1670s, in the Edo period, and the rear one, from the Meiji era, which uses Mount Wakakusa, the Kasuga mountains and the Nandaimon gate of Tōdai-ji as its backdrop, without hiding them behind a hedge. One of the tea rooms is a faithful copy of the Yūin, an Important Cultural Property of the Urasenke school, built under the guidance of the school's twelfth master, Yūmyōsai.

Isuien is a stroll garden in the centre of Nara, made up of two separate gardens on a single plot: the front one, from the 1670s, and the rear one, from the Meiji era. It is designated a 名勝 (Place of Scenic Beauty) at national level; the source does not give the year.
