The oldest shrine in Hamamatsu (806): it renews its buildings every 20 years, like Ise.
Founded, according to tradition, in 806, it is cited as the oldest shrine in Hamamatsu. Like the Grand Shrine of Ise, it renews its buildings at fixed intervals (式年遷宮, shikinen sengū), here every 20 years. In October the autumn festival carries the mikoshi, the sacred palanquin, through the streets.
The shrine is said to have been founded in 806 and is cited as the oldest in Hamamatsu. It stands between the Yunohana Kaidō, Yanagi Street and Rokken Street, now busy roads in the Kōdachi neighbourhood, and, like the shrine of Ise, it follows shikinen sengū, the periodic rebuilding of the sacred buildings: here every 20 years.
