Matsuura Sayohime waved her scarf here: hence the name, ‘mountain of waving’.
A mountain of 283.56 metres with two viewpoints at the summit, one to the west and one to the east. From Kagamiyama you can see the Niji no Matsubara pine grove, Karatsu Bay and the islands of Takashima, Torashima and Kamatsushima; on clear days Iki too, which is already in Nagasaki. The alternative name, Hirefuri-yama, comes from the legend of Matsuura Sayohime, who from here waved her scarf in farewell to the ship of Ōtomo Sadehiko bound for Korea: the story is told in the Man'yōshū, the eighth-century poetry anthology.
A site mentioned in classical Japanese poetry since the Nara period, now a public viewpoint.
ℹ️ Free entry, accessible by car all the way to the summit.
