About 100 species of pufferfish: more than any other aquarium in the world, because of the local fugu.
The aquarium, on Shimonoseki's former port area, displays about 550 marine species over five floors, but what sets it apart is the pufferfish: around a hundred different species, the highest number in the world, as a tribute to the local fugu tradition. The sub-Antarctic penguin tank, 6 metres deep and holding about 700 cubic metres of water, is among the largest in the world for a penguin colony, with four species.
Shimonoseki's municipal aquarium, opened in the Arukapōto area on the waterfront, near the Kanmon Kaikyō.
