The classrooms from 1933, Gothic and modelled on Yasuda Hall (Tokyo), have been a cultural property since 2003.
The present building was built between 1932 and 1935 to a design by the technical office of Nagano Prefecture: it was the prefecture's first reinforced-concrete school building, with pointed arches and tapering columns in Gothic Revival style, openly inspired by Yasuda Hall at Tokyo Imperial University. The classroom block (2,579 m²) and the adjoining auditorium have been a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (登録有形文化財) since 2003; in 1982 the building had already been included among the 2,000 notable buildings selected by the Architectural Institute of Japan out of 13,000 modern buildings surveyed across Japan.

It is the model for Kikyō Girls’ High School, Kaoruko's school: it appears in the first episode and in the seventh, where the sports competition takes place on the same field shown here, and in the drawings you can recognise the wooden building, the wide corridors and the stairs. The first four real-life shots of the opening sequence come from here: a classroom, the bicycle rack and the sports field itself. It is the only attribution in the series confirmed by the production: the school is listed in the end credits among the 協力, and the producer names it in an interview, saying he went ‘to Matsumoto Fukashi High School in Nagano, with its distinctive historic wooden building’.
