You buy the fish on the ground floor and go up to the first floor to have it cooked to order.
Stalls of fish in improbable colours (the blue parrotfish, the whole pig hanging up) fill the ground floor, where the counters sell to the public as in any market. What sets it apart is upstairs: you take up what you bought downstairs, and the restaurants cook it the way you choose, for a preparation fee. It is not a restaurant that sells fish: it is a market where you hire the kitchen.
Founded in December 1950 as a post-war public market, rebuilt in 1972, moved to a temporary building in July 2019 and reopened in the current building in March 2024. It is the food hub of the Makishi neighbourhood, a short walk from Kokusai-dori.
ℹ️ Open 8:00–22:00 (varies from shop to shop); on the ground floor last orders are at 19:45, on the first floor the kitchen closes at 20:00. Closed on the fourth Sunday of every month (except December), 1–3 January and on the two days after Obon in the lunar calendar.
