Mitani Onsen
Mitani Onsen

The onsen lies within the Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park, and its four recorded springs range from 24.8 to 33.7°C, with measured flow rates between 60 and 230 litres per minute.

It falls within the designated area of the Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park (三河湾国定公園), established to protect the coast facing the island of Mikawa and the Atsumi Peninsula. The four springs have different compositions, from the sodium-calcium chloride water of the first two to the alkaline simple water of the third and the weakly radioactive simple water of the fourth. The hotel district, which local legend dates back to a discovery by the monk Gyōki about 1,200 years ago, today has 9 establishments against the more than 30 of its peak years, and receives about 600,000 visitors a year.

Mitani Onsen is a hot spring resort in the Mitani-chō neighbourhood of the city of Gamagōri, Aichi Prefecture, on Mikawa Bay, within the Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park (三河湾国定公園). Local legend attributes the discovery of the spring to the monk Gyōki, about 1,200 years ago. Post-war development, helped by better roads, made it a leisure destination for Nagoya and Toyohashi. There are four recorded springs: No. 1 at 30.7°C with a flow of 170 litres per minute (sodium-calcium chloride), No. 2 at 33.7°C with 110 litres per minute (same composition), No. 3 at 27.1°C with 230 litres per minute (alkaline simple) and No. 4 at 24.8°C with 60 litres per minute (weakly radioactive simple). The hotel district has 9 establishments today, against more than 30 in its peak years before the economic bubble burst. The area receives about 600,000 visitors a year and is close to the Laguna Gamagori water park, opened in 2002.

ℹ️ Access to the baths follows the hours and rates of the individual places to stay in the hot spring district. Mitani's spring No. 3 also supplies, by tanker lorry, the facilities of nearby Nishiura Onsen, whose own spring has run dry.
