Opened in 1969, Japan's first open-air museum: 120 sculptures across 70,000 m².
On seventy thousand square metres of land looking out over the Hakone mountains, an outdoor route brings together about 120 sculptures by modern and contemporary artists; indoors, the Picasso Gallery shows, in rotation, part of a collection of 319 works. There is also a footbath (足湯) with real hot-spring water, inside the museum route.
Opened on 6 September 1969, it was Japan's first open-air museum; the project was by the sculptor Inoue Bukichi, and the first director was Kanai Nobutaka, president of the Fuji Sankei Group.
