Its tunnel aquarium is the largest in Japan devoted solely to the fish of a lake.
Opened on 20 October 1996, the museum covers almost 24,000 square metres across the ground floor and basement and displays, besides Japan's largest tunnel aquarium devoted to the endemic fish of Lake Biwa, a partial skeleton of a Tsudanskii elephant (the first reconstruction of its kind in the world) and daily observations of plankton collected from the lake itself. In February 2023 an acrylic panel of the large catfish tank broke before opening time, flooding the area: the museum launched a fundraising campaign to repair it after establishing that the cause was deterioration of the material.
