9 of the world's 18 penguin species live here: no other aquarium keeps as many.
Opened in 2001 on the Tachibana Bay waterfront, replacing the old city aquarium that closed in 1998, it keeps 9 of the 18 penguin species in the world: about 180 birds, the highest number of species in captivity according to the 2021 count. ‘Fureai Penguin Beach’, opened in 2009, lets the penguins swim in a bay with no glass between them and the visitors.
Run by the municipality of Nagasaki, it stands on the site of the earlier Nagasaki Aquarium (1959–1998). Besides the penguins it houses 165 other marine species, about 9,700 animals in all, with tanks devoted to the local wildlife of Kyūshū.
ℹ️ Open daily 9:00–17:00. Admission: adults 800 yen, students (elementary to high school) 400 yen, preschool children free. By bus from Nagasaki Eki-mae, about 270 yen and 40 minutes; by taxi about 30 minutes, 2,500 yen.
