The ship to China of 736, reconstructed at the centre of the museum, recalls the island's ancient name, Nagato, in the Man'yōshū.
The museum displays models of boats from antiquity to the present day; at the centre of the hall stands a full-scale reconstruction of a ship for the Tang envoys, based on sources more than 1,200 years old.
Museum devoted to the history of shipbuilding on the island of Kurahashi, in the municipality of Kure. Kurahashi, the southernmost island of the prefecture and the fifth largest in the Seto Inland Sea, was already building ships in ancient times: tradition has it as the shipyard for the ships of the envoys to the Tang court (遣唐使船). In 736 a group of envoys bound for Silla stopped here and composed eight poems, later collected in the Man'yōshū, which call the island by its ancient name, Nagato. The museum opened in 1992.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–16:30, closed on Mondays (the following day if a public holiday) and at the turn of the year. Combined ticket with the Kurahashi History and Folklore Museum: adults 400 yen, high school students 240 yen, junior high and younger 160 yen.
