Noren Alley

14 venues in a single building inside Nijo Market, open from 7:00 to 1:30.

Inside Nijo Market, a two-storey building in long-house style holds fourteen different venues, each marked by a cloth curtain, the noren, which gives the alley its name. At the counter of a tavern open since 2007, the sake (Japanese rice wine) served by the glass changes every day depending on availability; upstairs, another serves oden (a Japanese stew of eggs, daikon and fish cakes) in a clear broth made with Rishiri seaweed.

The alley came into being in 2007 inside Sapporo's Nijo Market, which sells fish and fresh produce by day and in the evening changes identity, becoming a row of small places to drink and eat.

ℹ️ The complex is open roughly from 7:00 to 1:30, but each venue keeps its own hours: the one upstairs is open only from 18:00 to midnight and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
