Created in 1871, the park hosts the Yuki Matsuri and the YOSAKOI festival in opposite seasons.
The linear park that cuts across the centre of Sapporo for 1.5 km, laid out from 1871 by Nagaoka Anpei and now planted with about 4,700 trees of 92 species, changes its role with the seasons: in winter it hosts the Yuki Matsuri, the snow festival with its ice sculptures, and in summer the YOSAKOI Sōran, the open-air dance competition with hundreds of teams from all over Japan. The Lilac Festival in May is also held in the same space.
The park splits the centre of Sapporo in two with a green strip 1.5 km long, laid out from 1871 by Nagaoka Anpei. It is the city's main public space and hosts its biggest open-air events in turn, in different seasons.
ℹ️ The snow festival has been held in early February at three venues (Odori, Susukino and Tsudome) since 1950; the 2027 edition is the 77th, from 4 to 11 February. The YOSAKOI Sōran festival, on the other hand, is held in June: in 2026 from 10 to 14 June, with 275 teams registered.
