Yunohira is a hot-spring resort that was already open in the Kamakura period, with springs documented from the Muromachi period. The famous stone paving that runs through the centre of the village, about 500 metres long, was laid in the Kyōhō period (early eighteenth century) by Kudō Sōsuke to ward off an epidemic. Every July the Daisōmen Nagashi is held there, one of the largest somen events (thin noodles sent flowing down water) in Kyūshū, on a dedicated 300-metre channel.

It is the main model for the abandoned resort ‘Monami’: the drawings show, with the characters only slightly altered, the real signs of つるや and 大吉. Monami, however, is not just one place: alongside Yunohira, the sources point to Yunotsuru and Tsuetate, in Kumamoto, both on the map.
