One of the 77 therapeutic hot-spring areas recognised by the state: four inns, six baths.
The Ministry of the Environment listed it in 2022 among the 国民保養温泉地, the seventy-seven hot-spring areas judged suitable for a proper cure: in the whole of Kumamoto there are two. The village is still a place of 湯治, the long bathing stay: old inns with shared kitchens, where people who come stay for days and cook for themselves. Those passing through for just an afternoon stop at the village baths.
A hot-spring resort about seven hundred years old along the Yude River, 9 km south-east of central Minamata.

One of the models for the ruined resort ‘Monami’ where Suzume gets lost chasing Sōta: Japanese sources recognise here the layout of the trailer's scenes, down to the diamond-pattern parapets. The Monami is a blend of several hot springs: first Yunohira in Oita, then this one and Tsuetate.
