You can only walk among the vents with a guide: 700 m, four slots, 30 places, 800 yen.
The ropeway drops you at 1,044 metres, and the smell of sulphur reaches you before the view does. The path among the vents, a seven-hundred-metre loop, reopened on 28 March 2022 after seven years of closure: you can only go with a guide and by booking, four slots a day, thirty people each. On the way back you buy kuro-tamago, the black eggs boiled in the spring.
Formed by an eruption about 3,000 years ago, it still vents fumaroles of hydrogen sulphide, with dead trees left standing and the clay-altered rock that gives the slope its reddish-brown colour; you can smell the sulphur from far away. About 2.5 km from Lake Ashi, and on the map for the same story arc: you visit them on the same outing. Address 足柄下郡箱根町仙石原1251.
ℹ️ You get there by the Hakone ropeway or by car. Access to the paths around the vents is closed when the volcanic alert level rises: it is worth checking before going up.

The volcanic valley where Senku, Taiju and Yuzuriha go to collect sulphur to make gunpowder: it is the model for the Hakone volcanic area in the series.
