Renamed in 2000 for the sake of its image, it went back to its original name in 2017: 71% in a survey.
The name (親不孝, ‘lacking in respect for one's parents’) was coined in 1976 as a bartender's joke, after students from two nearby schools took to spending their time here instead of studying for their exams. The police imposed a change in 2000 because of the negative image; in 2017 local business owners brought back the original name, backed by a survey of residents that gave 71% in favour of the old name against 19% for the new one.
Oyafuko-dori, a street of nightspots in Tenjin, began in the ’70s as a student haunt near two private colleges. The street's name has changed form twice: from ‘Oyafuko-dori’ to ‘Oyafukou-dori’ in 2000 at the request of the police, then back to ‘Oyafuko-dori’ in 2017 on the initiative of local business owners.
ℹ️ The street is public and can be walked at any time; the nightspots that give it its name open in the evening.
