The right hand points to the atomic threat, the left to peace: 30 tonnes, from 1955.
The Peace Statue, sculpted by Kitamura Seibo and unveiled on 8 August 1955 after four years of work, raises its right hand to point to the atomic threat and stretches out its left in a gesture of peace; it is 9.7 metres tall on a pedestal of 3.9 and weighs about 30 tonnes. Every 9 August the official ceremony for the victims is held right in front of it.
The park, opened on 1 August 1950, occupies a hill north of the hypocentre; the statue was paid for with donations collected in Japan and abroad, with municipal funds for the pedestal.
ℹ️ Public park, always open, free of charge. Official ceremony every 9 August.
