The first Western-style public park in Japan, opened on 1 June 1903 to a design by Honda Seiroku. There are two fountains, in different places: the Crane Fountain (鶴の噴水), in the cloud-shaped pond near the Kasumi Gate, is one of the oldest ornamental fountains in Japanese city parks (during the war it was dismantled and the pond filled in, and both were rebuilt after the war). The Great Fountain (大噴水) is on the other side: thirty metres in diameter, jets up to twelve, and it comes on every twenty-eight minutes from 8:00 to 21:00.
ℹ️ Free entry and no gate that closes; the service centre is open 8:30–17:30 all year except over New Year. The area of the Great Fountain and the small music pavilion is reported as fenced off for redevelopment works: before making a special trip, it is worth checking the park's website.
