13 reconstructed buildings evoke the castle town that had 30,000 inhabitants at the end of the Edo period.
Visitors enter a row of thirteen reconstructed buildings (samurai houses, merchant houses, the port office, an inn, fish wholesalers) that together recreate the town that grew up around Matsumae Castle. At the end of the Edo period the town had about 8,000 households and 30,000 inhabitants: the most populous north of Sendai.
The site is a museum reconstruction of the castle town of Matsumae, the only domain in Hokkaido in the Edo period (1603–1868). The buildings reproduce the trades and houses that brought the town to life at its population peak.
