Free antiques market every 2nd Sunday in the shrine courtyard

A Shinto shrine of ancient rank (式内社), listed in the Engishiki code of 927, today the tutelary shrine of Chōfu. Every second Sunday of the month it hosts a free antiques market in its courtyard, about 50 stalls from 7:00 to 15:00. It is also linked to the cartoonist Mizuki Shigeru, an honorary citizen of Chōfu, with themed statues along the approach.

Once the protector of the five post-station villages (布田五宿) on the old Kōshū Kaidō road, the shrine already appears in the Engishiki code of 927 as a 式内社, that is, among the shrines of rank recognised by the state in the 10th century. It is a few minutes' walk from Chōfu Station, past the Tenjin shopping street and the Kōshū Kaidō.

ℹ️ Free entry, no stated closing time for the courtyard; the office for seals and amulets has its own hours, not published on the official website. The antiques market ‘布多天神骨董てんこもり’ is held every second Sunday of the month, 7:00–15:00, about 50 stalls. ⚠️ At New Year the queue to pray is over 20 minutes, and photos are forbidden in the inner shrine.
