A water channel still runs in front of the samurai houses, which are open free of charge.

An open-air channel runs along the whole street, with water that still flows in front of the houses today: three residences (Shinozuka, Yamamoto and Torida) are open to view inside, free of charge, among the stone walls of the district of the middle- and lower-ranking samurai of the Matsudaira clan.

An Edo-period residential district built for the lower-ranking samurai serving Shimabara Castle, one of the few in Japan preserved with the original layout of its streets and of its system of water channels for household use and firefighting.

ℹ️ The streets can always be walked free of charge; the three house museums (Shinozuka, Yamamoto, Torida) and the Sakakibara local history museum have their own opening hours, to be checked on the official site.
