Five shops selling fish, tea and kombu seaweed keep alive the market that opened in 1923.
Under the canopy of the arcade (the shotengai), five minutes from Sannomiya, one sells fresh fish, one tea, one kombu seaweed: five shops hold out among the lowered shutters. The market began in 1923 as the neighbourhood's ‘kitchen’; the present structure, from 1960, is the rebuilding after the bombing. It closes on Sundays, and a legend links it to Oine, the fox of Ninomiya Shrine, with which it is affiliated.

The second half of Rumi's neighbourhood: the arcade lends shop windows and alleys to the fictional shotengai ‘Kunomiya-suji’, and Daijin the cat escapes from the covered market next door. Rumi's snack bar comes from combining this shotengai with the one in Higashiyama, 3 km to the west and on the map.
