The pavilion's floor plan is shaped like Gifu Prefecture: the path makes 148 turns.
Opened in 1995 to a design by the artist Arakawa Shūsaku and the poet Madeline Gins, the 18,000-square-metre park deliberately does away with vertical lines and horizontal planes, replacing them with artificial horizons designed to upset the visitor's balance. The main pavilion, the ‘Critical Resemblance House’, reproduces in its floor plan the outline of Gifu Prefecture; the path between the nine structures of the elliptical field makes 148 turns. About one hundred thousand people visit it each year.
Conceptual art park conceived by Arakawa Shūsaku and Madeline Gins, opened in 1995 in Yōrō Park as a physical experience of perceptual disorientation.
