The only museum in Asia with Van Gogh's Sunflowers, in the collection since 1987
The museum opened in 1976 as a gallery at the top of an insurance company's skyscraper and moved in 2020 to a dedicated six-storey building. Its only permanent work is one of the seven Sunflowers painted by Van Gogh, which entered the collection in 1987: it is the one on view in Asia. The rest of the space hosts rotating temporary exhibitions, and the ticket changes with each exhibition.
Opened in 1976 at the top of the skyscraper of the insurance company that founded it, it moved in 2020 to its current dedicated six-storey building in Nishi-Shinjuku. Its permanent work, one of Van Gogh's seven Sunflowers, entered the collection in 1987: the museum confirms only the year, not the price paid or the exact day, which appear only in secondary sources not checked here.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–18:00 (Fridays until 20:00, depending on the exhibition), entry until 30 minutes before closing; closed on Mondays, on exhibition changeover days and at the end of the year. Ticket varies by exhibition: for the exhibition running in September 2026, adults 2,000 yen (1,800 in advance), under-26s 1,200 yen (1,100 in advance), students up to high school and people with disabilities free. A compact museum: several reviews say an hour is enough, unless there are queues at the shop till on busy days.
