‘Whoever goes to Ise should go to Taga too’: so runs the saying that has linked the two shrines for centuries.
Dedicated to the primordial couple Izanagi and Izanami, the shrine is reached by crossing the Taikō-bashi, a steeply arched bridge built in 1638 by order of the shogunate and traditionally linked to the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Every evening on 3, 4 and 5 August, at 19:00, all the lanterns of the Mantō-sai, the festival of ten thousand lights, are lit together.
Shinto shrine dedicated to Izanagi and Izanami, among the most important in Japan for the tradition of longevity and of the marriage bond, hence its affectionate nickname ‘Otagasan’.
