Every evening, 365 days a year, four of the 33 dances of the local kagura are performed.
Every evening of the year, for an hour from 20:00, Takachiho Shrine hosts a performance of four of the 33 dances of the local kagura (高千穂神楽), a form of Shinto ritual dance recognised as an intangible cultural property. It is a shortened version designed for visitors: the full cycle of 33 dances is instead held from village to village, on nights between November and February.
The main shrine of Takachiho, with its thousand-year-old cedar and its pair of wedded cedars. It is about 400 m from the Takachiho Michi-no-Eki and 500 m from Gamadase Market.
ℹ️ Open grounds, always accessible. The kagura dances are held every evening in the pavilion next door, and those do have set times and an admission charge.
