Takachiho Gorge — Manai Falls (高千穂峡・真名井の滝)

A hire boat (4,100 yen, 30 minutes) passes beneath the 17 metres of Manai Falls.

The walls of the gorge are lava from Mount Aso, cooled into basalt columns and then cut by the Gokase River into a deep canyon: the scenic trail, about one kilometre long, runs along its rim. At the centre is Manai Falls, 17 metres, one of the hundred most beautiful waterfalls in Japan in the official 1990 ranking; a rowing boat (4,100 yen for 30 minutes, up to three people, can only be booked online) takes you beneath the fall, and if you take one early in the morning you avoid the queue that forms after 8:30. Takachiho is linked to the myth of the heavenly descent (天孫降臨), and tradition ties the whole gorge to it.

The Gokase River valley was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1934, and since 1965 it has been part of Sobo-Katamuki National Park. It is the most photographed gorge in Miyazaki and, together with the shrine of the same name, the symbol of the small town of Takachiho.

ℹ️ Free entry to the trail. Paid car parks, 500–1,000 yen, generally open 8:00–17:00. Boat hire all year, 8:30–17:00, last boarding 16:30; booking online only, from two weeks to two days in advance. The service stops when the river is in flood. ⚠️ The footpath has no stated closing time and may remain accessible after the car parks close.
