590 metres and over 150 shops beneath Tenjin, built to resemble Europe in the nineteenth century.
Beneath the streets of Tenjin run 590 metres of arcades with over 150 shops, built to resemble a nineteenth-century European city. Streets 1–6 follow the style of northern Europe, with stained glass and automatic clocks; streets 7–12 are in Mediterranean style, with natural light coming down from above.
The Tenjin Chikagai (天神地下街, ‘Tenjin underground town’) runs beneath the central shopping district of Fukuoka for 590 metres, with stone floors and decorated ceilings that imitate nineteenth-century European architecture. The sections are divided into two styles: northern European in streets 1–6, Mediterranean in streets 7–12.
