Walls of green stone that brightens in the rain: the castle was pulled down in 1875.
What remains of the outer walls is a ring of mottled green stone (the same ‘Awa blue stone’ as the Oboke gorges), which changes colour in the rain and draws visitors who come specifically for that. The tenshu and the other buildings were demolished in 1875, after the Meiji edict abolishing castles: today the 61.7-metre hill and the moat are a city park, with the Eagle Gate rebuilt in 1989.
Built between 1585 and 1586 by Hachisuka Iemasa after the Shikoku campaign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who granted him the province of Awa (186,000 koku). National Historic Site since 2006, one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles (no. 76); the palace garden has been a national Place of Scenic Beauty since 1941.
ℹ️ Free public park, always open; the Tokushima Castle Museum inside has its own opening hours, to be checked on the official website. North of JR Tokushima Station, in the city centre.
