13 metres tall, cast in 1977 so that disasters like that of '45 would not happen again.
The great bronze Buddha, 13 metres tall and weighing 32 tonnes, was erected in 1977 in the hope that catastrophes such as the great Tokyo fire of 1945 and the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923 would not happen again. The temple moved to this site, on the northern edge of Tokyo towards Saitama, in 1971.
Jōrenji Temple keeps what Tokyoites simply call ‘Tokyo Daibutsu’: a seated bronze statue, cast in 1977 after three years of work by about 3,500 people. In 1982 it was included among the ‘New Hundred Views of Tokyo’ (新東京百景).
