Founded in 1627, the largest Hachiman shrine in Edo: 65,000 tsubo of land.
Home of the Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri (深川八幡祭り), the ‘water festival’ and third of the great festivals of Edo along with Kanda and Sannō: every three years 54 neighbourhood mikoshi parade among the spectators, who drench them with buckets of water as they pass. 2026 is a grand festival year, 12–16 August.
Founded in 1627 by divine revelation on what was then the island of Eitai, it is the largest shrine dedicated to Hachiman in all of Edo, with about 65,000 tsubo of land and the historic patronage of the Tokugawa shoguns. Small monthly festivals fall on the 1st, the 15th and the 28th of every month; the grand one, the Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri, comes round every three years in August.
ℹ️ The shrine grounds can be visited 24 hours a day; the offices (prayers, amulets) are open from 9:00 to 17:00. The 2026 Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri is held from 12 to 16 August, with the grand procession of the 54 mikoshi on 16 August. 3–4 minutes on foot from Monzen-Nakachō Station (Tōzai / Ōedo).
