A double caldera from 15–35 thousand years ago: 326.8 m, the third deepest lake in Japan.

The lake fills a double caldera that collapsed between 35,000 and 15,000 years ago: 326.8 metres at its deepest point, between the Nakayama and Ogura peninsulas, make it the third deepest lake in Japan, with clarity reaching 9 metres. From Yasumiya the cruise sets off and in about 50 minutes skirts the two peninsulas, between cliffs that the lake's volcanic origin has left sheer for up to 220 metres.

Volcanic lake straddling Aomori and Akita, at the heart of Towada-Hachimantai National Park; designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument since 1936. The only inland body of water in Japan registered as a regional port, with two landings for tourist traffic.

ℹ️ The shores and paths of Yasumiya are freely accessible all year. Boat cruise running roughly from April to November: 1,650 yen adults, 880 yen children, 50% discount with a disability certificate. From JR Hachinohe, direct JR bus ‘Towada-ko’ to Yasumiya in about 2 and a quarter hours.
