Known as ‘Hakata's kitchen’: about 35 shops along a 100-metre corridor since 1918.
Born at the beginning of the Taishō/Shōwa era (sources give 1917–1918), when fishmongers began selling fresh fish from carts near Yanagibashi Bridge on the Naka River, the market is now nicknamed ‘博多の台所’, Hakata's kitchen: about 35 shops side by side along a corridor about 100 metres long and 3 wide, including fishmongers, butchers, tofu shops and tea shops. It is still a living neighbourhood market, used every day by restaurant owners and families from the city centre, not a market set up for tourists.
ℹ️ General opening hours 8:00–18:00, but they vary from shop to shop (source: yokanavi.com, Fukuoka's official tourism site, which does not give a closing day common to the whole market). Nishitetsu bus stop ‘Yanagibashi’.
