Fukuoka has 90% of Japan's licensed street food stalls: 103 in 2024.

Every evening the yatai, the mobile street food stalls, are set up along the streets of Nakasu, Tenjin and Nagahama: 103 were recorded on 31 January 2024, about 90% of all those licensed on public land in Japan. They serve 1.19 million customers a year, for an estimated economic spin-off of 104.9 billion yen, almost double that of 2011.

Yatai are mobile stalls that in the evening take over pavements and riverside embankments in Nakasu, Tenjin and Nagahama, then disappear before morning. Fukuoka has the highest concentration of stalls licensed on public land in the whole of Japan: on 31 January 2024 there were 103, about 90% of the national total.

ℹ️ Almost all the stalls open from the evening onwards; during the day the pavement stays empty. The average spend recorded is about 1,923 yen per person.
