Devastated by the 2016 earthquake, Kumamoto Zoo fully reopened on 22/12/2018.
Opened in 1929 next to Suizenji Garden and moved in 1969 to its present site on the shore of Lake Ezu, Kumamoto Zoo and Botanical Garden grew in 1986 with the addition of a botanical section, on the occasion of a national urban greenery fair. The Kumamoto earthquake of April 2016 seriously damaged the park's facilities: full reopening came only on 22 December 2018, two and a half years later. Today it is home to about 110 species and 550 animals – among them the kinshikō, the golden-muzzled monkey that Chinese tradition associates with the Monkey King – alongside an area of seasonal plants and a small playground.
ℹ️ Open 9:00–17:00, last entry at 16:30. Closed on Mondays (if a public holiday, on the first weekday after; on the fourth Monday of the month it is open and closes the next day) and from 30 December to 1 January. Tickets: adults and high school students 500 yen, elementary school and junior high school children 100 yen, younger children free.
