The giant salamanders grow to a metre and a half, and you cannot see them anywhere else in the city.
The tank that justifies the ticket is the one with the Japanese giant salamanders: animals up to a metre and a half long, motionless on the bottom, which are a national Special Natural Monument. The rest takes an hour and a half, and three times a day (at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30) there is the dolphin show, which is short.
A city aquarium opened inside Umekōji Park, a short walk from the railway museum. The Japanese giant salamander it displays is a national Special Natural Monument, meaning it has the highest protection Japan gives to a species.
ℹ️ ¥2,600 adults, ¥2,000 high school students, ¥1,400 elementary and junior high, ¥900 from age three; annual pass from ¥2,000 to ¥5,800; half price with a disability certificate, extended to one companion. It is just outside Umekōji-Kyōto-Nishi Station. The dolphin show is at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30. ⚠️ Opening hours and closing days are not stated: the site publishes a day-by-day calendar, to check before you go. ⚠️ The ¥2,600 per person is the criticism that comes up most often in reviews.
