A sake brewery since 1702, the westernmost in Tokyo: tours from 700 yen, 4 slots a day
The guided tour goes through the brewery's rammed-earth buildings, four slots a day on weekdays (two fewer, at different times, on public holidays) and closed on Mondays, down to the well dug into the rock from which the spring water used for fermentation flows. Next door, on the banks of the Tama River, the Sawanoi-en garden serves tastings and meals. Since July 2025 the tour, previously free, costs 700 yen.
Ozawa Shuzō has made sake since the Genroku period: the company dates its founding to 1702 on the basis of period documents cited in its official history, and it is the westernmost of the nine breweries still active in Tokyo. The oldest building in the complex bears the trade name 元禄蔵 (Genroku-gura, the Genroku-period storehouse): no official source, however, confirms that the physical structure dates from that year, unlike the company's founding date.
ℹ️ The guided tour (about 40 minutes, official website) leaves four times on weekdays (11:00 and 13:00) and three times on public holidays (11:00, 12:30, 14:00); closed on Mondays (on Tuesday if the Monday is a public holiday). It costs 700 yen, free for under-20s. The adjoining Sawanoi-en garden is open 10:00–17:00 (16:30 from December to February). About 100 metres from JR Sawai Station, Ōme Line, on the bank of the Tama River in the Mitake valley.
