A real spring (sodium chloride), renovated in 2023: timed sauna sessions, often with a wait
In business for 80 years in the Fukagawa neighbourhood, the sentō (public bath) was reborn in March 2023 as ‘Fukagawa Onsen Tokiwa-yu’, with its 宮造り (temple-style roof) exterior intact and the interior rebuilt. The water is a real sodium chloride mineral spring, amber in colour, not simply heated mains water as in most sentō. The new sauna, with a burst of steam every 20 minutes, has made the place a reference point for enthusiasts, to the point of causing queues.
In business for 80 years according to the operator, the sentō closed for a complete renovation and reopened on 16 March 2023 under the new name ‘Fukagawa Onsen Tokiwa-yu’. The spring is a real sodium chloride mineral water: a rare feature among Tokyo's public baths, which usually heat plain mains water.
