The only oil field on the Pacific side: in 1874, the country's first mechanical drill.
Discovered in 1872 and put into production the following year by Ishizaka Shūzō, a pioneer of Japanese oil, the Sagara field is the only one on the Pacific side of Japan to have yielded crude oil. In 1874 the country's first mechanical drill (American-made) went into operation there, and at its peak, around 1884, it had 240 wells and about 600 workers. Production continued until about 1955; today the site is a prefectural cultural property.
Sagara crude was of rare quality, so rich in petrol and kerosene that it could be used almost unrefined in engines after simple filtering. The park preserves period wells and equipment, with the oil field museum attached.
ℹ️ Museum open 9:00–16:00, closed on Tuesdays and at New Year. Address: Sugagaya 2525-1.

The only Dr. Stone location that appears in the series under its real name: in volumes 10–11 the Kingdom of Science needs oil for the Perseus's engine and sets its sights on the Sagara oil field itself, the only one on the Pacific side where crude oil still flows. Inside the park is the Oil Field Museum, and there the municipality of Makinohara has set up, with Shūeisha's consent, a permanent corner dedicated to the series: the map of the points in the manga where Sagara appears, posters from the anime's second season, volumes to leaf through and a notebook for visitors' messages. It is the only permanent installation dedicated to Dr. Stone in Japan, and it was made by a municipality, not by a promotional event.
