‘Inspired by China's West Lake’: a widespread legend, but no document confirms it.
For years a sign in the garden claimed that the design was inspired by the West Lake of Hangzhou, in China; on a later visit the sign was gone, and no original design document confirms that story. The Japanese garden, 12,000 m², does have a pavilion on the water (浮見堂, ukimidō) and a pond with a dry landscape garden.
The Japanese garden occupies part of the larger Ōhori Park, and is an area separate from the rest of the park, which by contrast is public and free.
ℹ️ Admission to the Japanese garden costs 250¥; the rest of the park around it is free.
