Wholesale and retail market in one: on Sundays you can buy sushi at the stalls.
Shimonoseki's fish market works at the same time as a wholesale market for professionals and as a retail market open to anyone, a combination the market itself describes as rare in Japan. Inside, the Haedomari section specialises in fugu, the pufferfish for which Shimonoseki is the national processing capital. At weekends and on public holidays the ‘Ikiiki Bakan-gai’ event turns the stalls into a row of vendors selling sushi and sashimi ready to eat on the spot: Friday and Saturday 10:00–15:00, Sundays and public holidays from as early as 8:00.
Founded in 1933, the market moved into its current building on 25 April 2001: 48 shops and a car park with 572 spaces, in a building that won the BCS (Building Contractors Society) prize in 2003, designed by the architect Ikehara Yoshirō.
ℹ️ General opening hours: Monday–Saturday 5:00–15:00, Sundays and public holidays 8:00–15:00. Address: 〒750-0005 山口県下関市唐戸町5-50, on the Karato waterfront, a short walk from the Kanmon Kaikyō and the Shimonoseki Aquarium Kaikyōkan.
