Started around 1820 as a silkworm market: today it is held in front of the only jinya left.
The market began around 1820 in the courtyard of the Takayama Betsuin temple as a mulberry market, and since then it has moved several times before settling in front of the Takayama Jinya, the only shogunal government office of the Edo period to have survived intact in Japan. The stalls sell seasonal vegetables and flowers, apples, cherries and peaches, handmade mochi and sarubobo, the good-luck dolls of the Hida valley. It is one of the three best-known morning markets in Japan, with Katsuura (Chiba) and Wajima (Ishikawa).
One of the three most famous morning markets in Japan, held every morning in front of the Takayama Jinya.
ℹ️ Open every morning; sources disagree on the exact hours (between 6:00/7:00 and 12:00 in the warm season, an hour later in winter), so check on the spot. During the Takayama Matsuri the hours are extended, from 6:00 to 15:00.
