The 1894 brick building, demolished in 1968, reopened as a museum in 2010.
The faithful reconstruction of the ‘三菱一号館’, the first Western-style office building in Marunouchi, now hosts rotating exhibitions of late nineteenth-century European art, three or four a year, plus a historic café on the ground floor. The rooms, small and low-ceilinged because they were not originally designed for a museum, become cramped when an exhibition is crowded.
The museum occupies the reconstruction of the ‘三菱一号館’ (Mitsubishi Ichigōkan), designed in 1894 by the British architect Josiah Conder for Mitsubishi: it was the first Western-style office building in the neighbourhood. The original was demolished in 1968; the current building, faithful to Conder's design, opened as a museum on 6 April 2010.
ℹ️ Hours vary by exhibition: normally 10:00–18:00, open until 20:00 on Fridays (according to some sources also on the second Wednesday and in the last week of each exhibition). Closed on Mondays, at the end and start of the year, and on days when exhibitions are changed over. Ticket price varies by exhibition (example: 2,300 yen).
