Nakaminato Fish Market

At the market, on three days at the end of December from 6:30, you can watch a whole tuna being cut up.

A dozen shops side by side sell fish landed that same morning at Nakaminato port, with prices kept low by direct competition between the stalls. At the end of December, on the 29th, 30th and 31st, the Maruki Suisan shop holds the traditional tuna-cutting show from 6:30 in the morning. The market draws about a million visitors a year, which makes it one of the best known in Kanto.

Fish market at the fishing port of Nakaminato, a district of Hitachinaka facing the Pacific Ocean, set up to sell to the public the catch in excess of what the wholesale channels take.

ℹ️ Hours vary from shop to shop, roughly from morning to early afternoon; the market as a whole closes on 1 January, and several shops also take Thursday as their day off. Check the individual shop's hours on the official website before setting out.
