Meijō Park, the north park

名城公園北園

Open on the mapwith over 1,800 wonders of Japan

A wisteria pergola 660 metres long, 85 plants, with Nagoya Castle behind it.

The park north of the castle has a pergola that runs for 660 metres: eighty-five wisteria plants of nine varieties overhead, and at the far end the stone walls and the roof of the castle. Around Golden Week, the run of public holidays between the end of April and the beginning of May, the clusters are in bloom and people walking underneath slow down. From the other end of the lawn, by Ofuke Pond, you can see the whole castle.

For the municipality, ‘Meijō Park’ is the collective name for the parks around Nagoya Castle, including the second and third baileys. This page is about the north park, in Kita ward, the one with the large lawn, the flower beds and Ofuke Pond. The wisteria pergola, which the municipality calls ‘the wisteria corridor’, was built by the city under a three-year plan starting in 1984: 660 metres long, 3,300 square metres of cover, nine varieties and eighty-five plants, from the castle's east gate to the south garden. In 2012 it became one of the twenty views the municipality chose as the city's urban landscape, and the stated reason is the sight: the purple of the clusters against the bronze of the castle's roof tiles.

ℹ️ The park is open and there is no charge. Flower Plaza, the north park's display greenhouse, opens 9:00–16:30 and is closed on Mondays (if it is a public holiday, the first weekday after), on the third Wednesday of the month and from 29 December to 3 January. Exit 4 of Meijō-kōen Station, Meijō Line, opens onto the park. The wisteria is in bloom around Golden Week, that is between the end of April and early May; outside those two weeks the pergola is an iron frame, and the place is worth what a neighbourhood park is worth, next to a place that is already in the catalogue.
