One of only three surviving gates of Edo Castle: a cultural property since 1961.
You pass through the gate in two stages: first an angled entrance, the korai-mon, then the gate tower proper, the yagura-mon – the same enclosed-courtyard sequence that was meant to slow an enemy down. It was rebuilt in 1658 after the Great Meireki Fire, and it has stood, in wood, ever since.
The north-east corner of the imperial grounds, between the Ushigafuchi moat and the Shimizu Gate of the Kitanomaru. The Shimizu moat, which the same sources mention, is the stretch of water just below the gate.
ℹ️ It can only be seen from outside: it is not a building you can go inside.
