An international port since 1899: one of the three most beautiful in Japan, with Kobe and Nagasaki.
Hinode Pier is the passenger front of Shimizu Port, which opened to international trade on 4 August 1899 (Meiji 32) and grew on tea exports to the United States. The more than one hundred foreign cruise ships that arrive each year dock here. Together with Kobe and Nagasaki, the port is counted among the ‘three most beautiful ports in Japan’ (日本三大美港): the only one of the three with Fuji in the background.
Surrounded by the pine grove of Miho no Matsubara and facing Suruga Bay, Shimizu Port is now a container and cruise port of the city of Shizuoka. The informal title of most beautiful port dates back to the seafaring traditions of the early twentieth century, when foreign crews cited it for the view of Fuji from offshore, different from the urban skylines of Kobe and Nagasaki.
ℹ️ The pier and the waterfront are a public pedestrian area, with no gate and no opening hours stated by the institutional source consulted. ⚠️ Access to the mooring berths proper is restricted when a ship is docked and in operation: the passenger terminal and the promenade, however, remain freely accessible.
