172 historic buildings on 4.4 hectares: protected since 1979, extended in 2004.
The streets of Kami-ichi, Kami-ni and Kami-san no machi were laid out by the Kanamori clan as a merchant castle town; 172 traditional buildings remain on about 4.4 hectares, with the typical low half-storey façade and deep eaves of the shop-houses. The area was recognised as a national preservation district in 1979, and in 2004 a second, adjacent sector (Shimo-ninomachi Ōshin-machi) received the same protection. Along the streets stand sake-gura, with a cedar ball (杉玉) hanging at the entrance, and craft shops.
Old merchant district of Takayama, developed under the Kanamori clan, which preserves the layout and the façades of the Edo-period shop-houses.
ℹ️ Public street, always accessible. 10 minutes' walk from Takayama Station. Individual shops and sake-gura have their own hours.
