Carp swim in the street's canal among 198 historic buildings with red Sekishu roofs.
The former samurai street, Tonomachi-dori, runs alongside a canal where koi carp swim; you can walk it in a few minutes from the train, between white walls, the old domain school (Yōrōkan) and the Catholic church rebuilt in 1929 next to the Buddhist temples, a rare detail for a small provincial town. The nickname ‘little Kyoto of San'in’ comes precisely from this mix of canals, red roofs and merchant houses that have survived almost intact from the late Edo period.
Historic district of the castle town of Tsuwano, designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (重要伝統的建造物群保存地区) in 2013 over 11.1 hectares. It includes Tonomachi-dori (the former samurai street) and Honmachi-dori (the former merchants' street), with about 198 historic buildings, among them the premises of the Furuhashi, Kasen and Hashimoto sakagura (sake breweries) and the gate of the Tago residence.
